Vizag may get $114m from World Bank 31-Jan-2015
The underground power cabling was mooted by chief minister Chandrababu Naidu in the aftermath of Cyclone Hudhud as part of his plans to make Vizag a smart, cyclone-resistant city. Confirming this, AP energy secretary Ajay Jain said: "The World Bank has agreed to sanction $114 million to the state exclusively for the underground power cabling of Visakhapatnam city. The state government has already approved the project and the Centre will give its approval after the detailed project report (DPR) is submitted. Work on the project will begin in the next three to four months." "We will take up the project in a phased manner. Though the project requires over Rs 1,000 crore, we will utilise the World Bank funding, which translates into nearly Rs 700 crore, for covering the main areas in the city with the underground network," Ajay Jain said. Jain claimed that the state government had mooted the project before the cyclone struck the city on October 12 last year, but made it public only after the city's power network was badly damaged by the cyclone that resulted in losses of over Rs 1200 crore to power utilities. The task of preparing the DPR for the project has been entrusted to PFC Consulting Limited, a subsidiary of state-run Power Finance Corporation Limited (PFC), said a senior Eastern Power Distribution Company of AP Limited (APEPDCL) official. In the last week of December, PFC Consulting had invited sealed bids from consultancy firms for preparation of the DPR for th...

Tepid response mars Visakha Utsav 30-Jan-2015
Visakha Utsav-2015 got off to a colourful start on Friday, capturing the essence of the region with tableaus and traditional performances like Dhimsa, Kollatam, Hari Katha and Burra Katha. The utsav was inaugurated at the main venue, RK Beach, in the afternoon, followed by tableaus and cultural programmes in the evening along with a few Naval exercises to keep the audience entertained. However, all the events witnessed moderate to low turnout. Inaugurating the event, Union urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, "Vizag has a glorious history and is home to many traditional art forms that are on the verge of extinction. Even during the colonial period, Vizag was the epicentre of anti-colonial expression and gave rise to many a hero like Alluri Sitarama Raju and Tenneti Viswantham." Blaming the timing of the fest for the poor show, organisers said they expect the trend to continue over the next couple of days as the event is being held after Sankranti holidays. "People have already enjoyed Sankranti and spent a lot of money then. We don't think they will be inclined to either spare time for the Utsav or even loosen their purse strings," said P Ramakrishna, the manager of a food stall at RK Beach. Those who have set up stalls at the venue feel that the fest could have attracted a bigger turnout if it had been organised before Sankranti as people from other parts of the state and even Telangana, particularly Hyderabad, had come to the city in droves to celebrate...
Surging Sea Triggers Panic at Vizag 30-Jan-2015
The surging tides on Saturday swept the shore swallowing 18 m of retaining wall just 200 m away from the venue on the Beach Road. However, the venue escaped the fury of the sea as the authorities had raised the ground to prepare the shore for the mega event. The retaining wall holding the Beach Road over a stretch of 18 m collapsed near the Kursura Submarine Museum at RK Beach due to the sea ingress. The sea remained very rough throughout the day causing panic among the visitors at the main venue. Rising concern among the residents of the Beach Road, the freshly damaged section is next to the recently filled breach. As the sea surge caused panic among the visitors, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) authorities sprung into action and dumped boulders along the coastline to avoid further erosion. On Saturday morning, the retaining wall near the Kursura Submarine Museum came crumbling down as gushing sea water from the swell waves breached the shoreline. The residents on the Beach Road said that the high tides were crashing over the retaining walls between The Park hotel and the Kali Mata Temple since Friday night. The police deployed additional personnel to prevent public from venturing into the beach. On information, city police commissioner Amit Garg inspected the spot and directed the senior police officials to deploy additional force including swimmers along the beach, particularly at the main venue of the Utsav. A major section of the Beach Road w...

Visakha Utsav concludes with a bang 30-Jan-2015
Thousands of people surged through the Beach Road on the last day of Visakha Utsav on Sunday to witness illumined fishing boats and fireworks on the sea. But bad traffic management led to chaos. There was no security check at all. Dozens of food stalls were set up on the beach. The Indian Navy too opened stalls displaying naval equipment, including models of ships, submarines, torpedoes, bombs and missiles. The beach was also vibrant with musical and dance performances. Danseuse Sobhana's mesmerising dance ballet was the highlight at the event. There was calisthenics performance by a South African troupe. Telugu actor Balakrishna was also present. With the threat of swine flu looming large many people turned up wearing masks and handkerchiefs tied around their mouths. A stall distributing IEC (Information, Education and Communication) material on swine flu was also put up by the district medical and health department. People gathered to collect pamphlets and learn more about the disease. Sharmila Ghosh, a Navy officer's wife who came with her family at Visakha Utsav, said, "I don't prefer to walk in crowded places. But despite the rush, the crowd here is decent and women could walk safely. I enjoyed going round the colourful stalls and displays." But visitors like Aishwarya Padmanavan, a law graduate from the city, criticised the city police for bad traffic management. "At least a couple of metal detectors should have been installed. There was parking problem too. APS...
AP to focus on industrial corridor 30-Jan-2015
With the Centre making it clear that there will be no special status for Andhra Pradesh, the TDP government has decided to step up its own efforts to industrialise the state. Accordingly, the Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC), developed in association with Asian Development Bank (ADB), will come up on a priority basis with thrust on four core sectors. The project is now being conceptualised to trigger enormous growth in the manufacturing output, according to government sources. In the changed strategy, the concept paper being prepared by ADB has been altered to ensure that all 13 districts are influenced by industrial activities in the corridor. The ADB has projected tremendous growth for Andhra Pradesh in the next 20 years. Once VCIC becomes functional, the ADB has projected that the manufacturing output would reach Rs 3,000 billion by 2025 and Rs 7,825 billion by 2035. Without it, the performance of manufacturing sector in the state would be just average. By 2025, at the present rate of performance, the output would not cross Rs 1,110 billion and by 2013, it would be just Rs 3,027 billion, according to the ADB report. The present output is worth Rs 1,000 billion. Industry department sources said that the Centre had accorded top priority to VCIC as compensation to the denial of special status to AP after bifurcation. "VCIC is going to be the first corridor in the country to take shape because unlike other corridors, it has been incorporated in the Andhra...

US to prepare smart city plan 30-Jan-2015
The US on Sunday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the AP government for development of smart cities across the state in general and Visakhapatnam in particular. Official sources said the US government is likely to involve consultants for preparing the smart city development project. The USA will give 'exposure' to AP officials and offer expert help to the state in creation of smart cities. The AP government plans to develop 14 smart cities. The USA will primarily focus on Vizag. Sources said IT giants such as IBM, Deloitte and Cisco have shown interest in preparing the development plan. "These companies will come up with their version of smart city plan for Vizag," said an official, who is actively monitoring the smart city programme in the state. The Centre recently came out with a concept note on smart cities. "The USA will also bring in some companies and agencies to invest in the state," the official said. Multinational companies including Cisco, IBM, 3M, EMC, GE, Honeywell, KPMG, Otis, Timken and Louis Berger have reportedly formed a consortium to help the smart city initiative in Vizag, Ajmer and Allahabad. This group will actively participate in development plans. The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) will monitor the project. These companies will also provide technological solutions
Prawn seed worth Rs. 32 cr Culled 30-Jan-2015
The officials of Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has culled L-Vannami variety shrimp brood stock worth around Rs. 32 crore at its Brood Stock Multiplication Centre (BMC) in Visakhapatnam, with the Union Ministry for Agriculture not according permission for the sale of the stocks in time. Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA), a research unit of the MPEDA, is running the BMC and is supplying Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) stocks to registered hatcheries across the country. However, farmers are forced to depend on private unregistered hatcheries owing to the delay in granting of permission from the Centre. MPEDA imports post-larvae (PL) from Oceanic Institute, USA and the BMC staff develop the PL into brood stock and the mother prawns, which are Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) and free from 16 diseases. With the Centre failing to give the permission in the stipulated time, the MPEDA officials killed the stocks at the multiplication centre, as it would be expensive for them to cultivate the brood stock from it. “We culled 8,000 L-Vannami brood stock recently. The RGCA staff usually raise the brood stock up to 40 grams and sell it to hatcheries to raise quality seed. But, due to the delay, shrimps have grown up to 75 grams each, which is not suitable for breeding,” explained MPEDA Deputy Director S. Kandan. “The officials have brought the issue to the notice of Agriculture Minister P. Pulla Rao, Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas, and Municipal Minist...
