Hopes Of Pharma Sector Shattered 30-Dec-2016
Industry in deep despair as many proposals remained on the paper. When 2016 began the pharma industry in the State hoped to get an impetus in exports following promises to set up campus of Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil), National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) and develop second pharma city. Almost a year later the industry is in deep despair as the proposals have remained on the paper. Not a single major investment has come to the region during the year. Moreover its demand for removal of Minimum Alternate Tax for units which came up in Special Economic Zone or reducing it from 20 to 7 per cent and doling out of sops for the new-born Andhra Pradesh has fallen on deaf ears. Pharma units are spread over Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram in North Andhra making the region the main hub of State’s pharma industry. Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City (JNPC), being operated in the PPP mode at Parawada has itself has an estimated turnover of Rs. 15,000 crore.
 
Visakha Utsav Rescheduled 29-Dec-2016
Chief Minister to inaugurate the carnival on January 28. Visakha Utsav an annual carnival aimed at showcasing the tourism potential of Visakhapatnam, will be held on January 28 to 30 instead of January 7 to 9 coinciding with the CII Partnership Summit-2017. One of the reasons for rescheduling is the preoccupation with Janmabhoomi programme. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu who is attending the three-day Partnership Summit will inaugurate the utsav. This year’s highlight will be to hold all the events like folk dances, flower show, creation of replicas of famous temples in the region on the 2.5 km stretch from RK Beach to VUDA Park.

Men spend major portion of income on alcohol, say fisher women. When men set out for fishing in the wee hours, women try to lend a helping hand to them by selling the fish in the market. While the Fishing Harbour remains the main marketing hub for the fisher folk residing at Peda Jalaripeta a portion of the varieties will also be sent to other markets. Peda Jalaripeta is one of the oldest fishing hamlets in the city where more than 10,000 people reside. Fishermen of the neighborhood say they are able to catch a considerable number of tunas quite often. Besides the local fish markets tunas are in great demand across Kerala and Tamil Nadu and will fetch big bucks. When we catch net tunas it literally means celebration to us says T. Parasanna, president of Grama Seva Sangham, Peda Jalaripeta.
 
Gangamma Jatara a Big Draw 27-Dec-2016
Villagers in large numbers throng the goddess temple and offer prayers. Thousands of villagers thronged the temple of goddess Arimanu Gangamma at Chinnampalle village of Yadamarri mandal 10 km from here and took part in the jatara. The highlight of the temple is that it is located under the giant banyan and neem trees, believed to be aged over 300 years. Along with Chinnampalle residents, the jatara also witnessed the participation of people from several villages in the surroundings, and from border hamlets in Tamil Nadu.
 
IIM Vizag to Organise ‘Samarambh’ 27-Dec-2016
VISAKHAPATNAM: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Visakhapatnam, will organise ‘Samarambh 17’, a national-level annual cultural fest for the B-Schools on January 21. The fest will have participation of 1,000 students from various IIMs from across the country and city engineering students. As part of the day-long programme, several competitions will be organised where in the participants will showcase their skills in their field of interest. Band Underground Authority and stand-up comedian Sridhar V, who is an alumnus of IIM Bengaluru will perform during the event for which students have to book tickets online through ‘Bookmyshow’ by paying 300.
 
North Bihar People Hold Convention 26-Dec-2016
People belonging to North Bihar held a convention at Nehru Park, Ukkunagaram on Sunday. Over 15,000 attended the meeting conducted by Mithila Sanskritik Parishad. Tributes were paid to famous poet Vidyapati. They also chanted ‘Jai Jai Bharavi Asur Bahraini. Panchayati Raj Minister Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu and MLA Palla Srinivas Rao attended. They spoke on the Mithila culture and the need to uphold it. Mithila Sankritik Parishad president Baikunth Jha welcomed the gathering and gave details of social service rendered by them.
 
Youth Top in Cellphone Driving Case 24-Dec-2016
Fine amount should be enhanced to act as a deterrent, say police. Last month a young girl in her early twenties was driving home from her college in Vizianagaram. She was not wearing a helmet and talking to a friend on mobile while driving the two-wheeler. Unable to control the scooter, she hit a speeding bus and died on the spot. Though there was no fatal accident in the recent times in Visakhapatnam city related to motorists using cell phones while driving, apart from the APSRTC driver who mowed down two pedestrians in Gajuwaka area in 2014 the cases booked by the police have been on a steady rise since 2014.

Inaugurating the third edition of Sale of Articles of Rural Artisan Societies (SARAS)- DWCRA Bazaar at Andhra University Engineering College Grounds on Friday, she reiterated the State government’s commitment to enhance the livelihood of self-help group women by providing them diverse platforms to sell their products and supporting them with various schemes and bank linkages.
 
Mathematics Day Celebrated 23-Dec-2016
Colleges and schools celebrated the National Mathematics Day on Thursday to commemorate the birth anniversary of mathematics wizard Srinivasa Ramanujan. Competition Students participated in elocution, quiz, chart presentation competition and PowerPoint Presentation competitions. They organised a coin exhibition. Former Rector of Andhra University K.L. Swamy was chief guest of the valedictory function. Principal and correspondent of the college and AU Executive Council member S.Vijaya Ravindra, Director of the college B.Murali Krishna, Hod of Mathematics D. Krishnaveni, faculty member E. Lavanya and others attended.
 
Vizag to Get Smart Meters 22-Dec-2016
The Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) will introduce smart meters to its consumers in Visakhapatnam for the first time in the State said TV Surya Prakash General Manager of APEPDCL in Visakhapatnam. He inaugurated the two-day Sankalp-2016 National level Student Symposium at SRKR Engineering College on Tuesday. The College EEE wing Head P Kantha Rao presided over the meeting. Speaking on the occasion Surya Prakash said that with the erection of the smart meters meter reading and load control will be done without visiting the consumer's houses.
