Born visually impaired Ms. Narayanamma went to the government school for visually impaired in Hyderabad up to SSC and later completed her intermediate and degree at BVK College here. A municipal school teacher she identifies with children tapping their latent talent and pens quick topical skits to create awareness on issues like education, health and gender equality and patriotic songs. Ship With 506 Passengers Stranded 29-Sep-2016
Visakhapatnam Sep 28 (IANS) More than 500 passengers were stranded on a ship off Visakhapatnam in the Bay of Bengal since Tuesday night, officials said. There are 506 passengers and 50 crew members on board M.V.Harshavardhana which sailed for the Andaman from here at 1.35 p.m. on Tuesday. Six hours later, the ship halted due to a technical snag and has been stuck in the sea since then. With turbulence in the sea, the passengers panicked and some of them contacted the media. An official of the Visakhapatnam district administration said: "One of the four generators is not functioning, which resulted in the ship coming to a halt. Efforts are being made to repair the generator. He said all passengers were safe and they were being provided food and water. Authorities at the Shipping Corp of India hope the ship will resume its journey soon. The duration of the journey by ship from Visakhapatnam to Andaman is about 70 hours.
 
Heavy Rains Hit Normal Life 29-Sep-2016
Visakhapatnam: Normal life came to a standstill after heavy rains lashed the port city and the district at regular intervals on Tuesday. Around 1500 houses in Yelamanchili were inundated while the Anakapalli bus stand got completely flooded. All the reservoirs in the districts have reached their full reservoir levels. Sarada river in Anakapalli was in spate and flood water flowed on the Tallapalem road in the district. As per the IMD reports coastal Andhra Pradesh would experience fairly widespread rains on Wednesday too and scattered rains on Thursday.
 
More Rain in Store Says Weatherman 28-Sep-2016
There was a let up in the rains from the afternoon bringing some relief to the people. But with the weatherman forecasting rains for the next two days the District Administration has alerted officials and staff from the mandal level as it is closely monitoring relief operations in the areas which faced inundation during the last few days. Collector Pravin Kumar who visited the Cyclone Warning Station here and held talks with the officials there is monitoring the situation from the Command Control Centre at the Collectorate. Steps are being taken to prevent loss of lives and property. Situation is being continuously monitored he said. Inundation was more in S. Rayavaram, Rambilli, Payakaraopeta and Nakkapalli mandals due to overflowing of Sarada and Varaha rivers. Nearly 6,900 have been shifted to nine camps in that area.
 
Free Entry into Zoo for Children 28-Sep-2016
Children below the age of 12 years will be given free entry into the zoo as part of the 62nd Vanya Prani Saptah from October 1 to 7. The wildlife week celebrations will be kicked off with a rally and followed by a film show at the Bioscope located on the zoo premises on October 1. Conservation education programmes by zoo volunteers and animal friends will be held on the next day Oct 3 being a Monday is a holiday for the zoo and visitors will not be allowed. Group discussions on wildlife and ecology related topics would be conducted at Bioscope on Oct 4 the animal keeper talks on elephant feeding and ecology on Oct 5 and cultural programmes would be organised on the next day. The celebrations would conclude on Oct 7
 
Ramps For Physically Challenged 27-Sep-2016
Guides should be posted wherever possible to create awareness among the physically challenged persons apart from ensuring their safety. Physically challenged persons should be exempted from payment of entry fee at tourist places to motivate them to visit such places. This is in tune with this year’s World Tourism Day theme of promoting universal accessibility The two-and-half-km Ramakrishna (RK) Beach identified as the longest footpath along any beach road in the country has now been provided with ramps to enable physically challenged persons to enjoy the beauty of the beach without any hindrance. The theme for this year’s World Tourism Day which falls on September 27 is Tourism for All Promoting Universal Accessibility. Celebration time The World Tourism Day celebrations would be organised on the Beach Road Opposite Viswapriya Function Hall on Tuesday evening.
 
Vizag Devotee Donates Gold Plating 26-Sep-2016
A devotee from Visakhapatnam, who did not want to be identified donated ornaments and gold plating (bronze sheets with gold malaam) worth Rs. 1 crore to the temple molded plates bearing the idols of deities which were made in Tamil Nadu. The all-new look surprised the devotees on Sunday. The idols of goddess Lakshmi and Saraswathi which hitherto were covered with silver plating got a new look. The Lakshmi on the mukha dwaaram etc were also gold plated.
 
Heli Tourism to Be Launched in Vsp 26-Sep-2016
Visakhapatnam: The much touted heli tourism, expected to boost the tourism potential of the city, will be launched from Dasara, said HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao. The Minister visited VUDA Park where the helipad is located and built at a cost of Rs 28 lakh, on Saturday. He said heli tourism will not only attract the tourists from other parts of the State but also attract people from neighbouring States of Odisha, Chattisgarh and West Bengal. The city gets lot of tourists from West Bengal during Dasara.
 
International School in Vizag 24-Sep-2016
The proposed international school in the port city of Visakhapatnam will be constructed at a cost of Rs 93 crore under public-private partnership (PPP) mode. This will be the first school in Andhra Pradesh to introduce International Baccalaureate (IB) syllabus. It will have an intake of 1,000 students to begin with. The strength will be increased to 2,000 gradually. Though the proposal was mooted and the bidding process completed a year ago by Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh, the final clearance came in the cabinet meeting on Thursday.
 
Vizag Leads Amazon Growth in AP 24-Sep-2016
VISAKHAPATNAM: Vizag takes the lead in contribution to overall sales from AP in the fashion category of online retailer Amazon with over three times growth in unit sales over the past one year said Mayank Shivam, category leader of Amazon Fashion. Addressing the media here on Thursday, he said Vizag contributes to over 20% of overall sales that come from AP making it one of the top cities for Amazon Fashion. He said Vizag is among the top 10 cities in terms of sales in India. He said the fashion category has witnessed a growth of over 200% year-on-year in Vizag, whereas overall in AP it is around 250%.
