Traditional folk art forms enthral children. All roads seemed to have led to Beach Road on Friday as thousands of people converged to witness a wide variety of events held on the penultimate day of the three-day Visakha Utsav, on Friday. Festive atmosphere A festive atmosphere prevailed on the 2-km stretch of Beach Road from R.K. Beach to VUDA Park as the crowd enjoyed the activities of their choice. The Jathara stage, where traditional art forms were displayed was a treat to watch. Children spent time watching the ‘Butta bommalu’ as they walked through the crowds, standing at around 10 feet. Some girls were scared to see a ‘bull’ (a man in bull attire) pouncing at them as it walked past them. The Butta Bommalu artistes came from Marteru in West Godavari district. The ‘Veera Natyam’ artistes from Amalapuram in East Godavari district and Dhimsa artistes of Araku performing rhythmic movements to the music and tribal artistes with traditional headgear like horns of a bison enthralled the city folk, who have little chance of witnessing such folk arts. The utsav came as a ‘god-send’ opportunity to the artistes as the folk and rural traditions are no longer getting the patronage they used to get in the good old days. “It is only during occasions like these that we are getting an opportunity to display our skills and entertain the public,” said a folk artiste. Heli Tourism Attracts Visitors in Visakhapatnam. The heli tourism project would be run jointly by VUDA, Tourism department and GVMC as a pilot project for three months. Visakhapatnam: The Heli tourism project which was launched by the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu during his visit to the city mid-December was made available to the public on Friday, as part of the Visakha Utsav. HRD minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao who flagged off the event at Rushikonda, said that Visakhapatnam would become a tourism destination in the coming days. The heli tourism project would be run jointly by VUDA, Tourism department and GVMC as a pilot project for three months. The en-minute sortie covering VUDA Park, Thotlakonda and Kailasagiri, costs Rs.2,499 but the price could be brought down a bit depending on public response, he said. Besides tourism, the chopper could be used in any medical emergency, and disaster management needs. Corporate houses could reach MoU for the purpose, he suggested. The minister also said Rs.16.82 crore would be spent on tourism sector, Rs.10 crore on development of Thotlakonda and Bavikonda, Rs.35 lakh for Tadiguda waterfalls, Rs.5 crore for Lambasingi resorts, Rs.2 crore for water sports at Mangamaripeta, Rs.1.5 crore for development of Yarada beach, Rs.3 crore each for development of tourism building and Dallapalli resorts, Rs.12 lakh for Tandava reservoir, Rs.15 lakh for Sarugudu waterfalls and Rs.50 lakh for street lighting in Araku and other w...

People queued up for the opening of TU-142 Aircraft Museum much before its opening for public on Thursday afternoon. The museum inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind recently, was opened to public on the first day of Visakha Utsav. Soon after the visit by Assembly Speaker Kodela Siva Prasada Rao, HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao and Marketing Minister Ch. Adinarayana Reddy visited the aircraft museum it was thrown open to public. The excitement was so much that a large number of persons that queued up at the Kursura submarine museum across the road immediately rushed to the TU 142. Besides the flight simulator game set up as a part of museum proved a big draw. The ticket was priced at Rs 70 for the aircraft museum and at Rs 100 for the simulator game. Timings: The newly-opened TU-142 Aircraft Museum and the Kursura Submarine museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the Visakha Utsav days, according to official information.
Visakha Utsav Off To A Grand Start 29-Dec-2017
The three-day extravaganza draws huge crowds on the inaugural day. The three-day Visakha Utsav began on a colourful note with a variety of entertainment programmes, a carnival, opening of the Aircraft Museum to the public, classical and folk performances by artistes and a flower show on Thursday. The entire stretch of the 2-km beach road, from R.K. Beach to VUDA Park, was literally chocked as thousands of students participated in the carnival from the YMCA to the main venue at RK Beach in the evening. Folk artists, dressed in their traditional attire, performing ‘Tappetagullu’, girls in colourful costumes, dancing in the caravan, girls dressed in the form of goddess Durga and artistes performing tiger dance drew the attention of the tourists and visitors on the inaugural day. Stilt artistes, some of them sporting royal attire and folk drummers, were a big draw among children and adults alike. Youngsters were seen taking selfies and pictures with their mobile phone with the traditional folk artistes, who participated in the carnival in colourful costumes. Film stars Akhil and Kalyani and music director Anoop Rubens added glitter to the inaugural function. The tastefully decorated main stage caught the attention of the crowd. Hovercraft cheer for Visakhapatnam by February. VISAKHAPATNAM: The much awaited hovercraft project is likely to be launched in the city by February. The project was supposed to take off by this December end. The project cost is around Rs 9 crore. RM Chaitanya Varma, MD of Hoverdock company said delay in transporting of ships from Russia to the city and land clearance from the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) had led to the impasse. "I brought the land issue to the notice of GVMC commissioner Hari Narayanan who said he would clear the land issue within a week. Varma said they would launch the preparation on the platform for the project near NTR statue at RK beach once land parcel is granted. GVMC had expressed willingness to hand over land opposite Hotel Sea Pearl on the Beach Road.

3-day festival will kick off with a folk carnival on Thursday. A treasure hunt on wheels, music, dance, food, water sports, helicopter rides, flower show, temple replicas and a lot more. Tourists and visitors can enjoy all these on the 2-km stretch from Novotel junction to VUDA Park during the 3-day Visakha Utsav, scheduled to begin on Thursday (Dec 28). A special stage with the ‘jatara’ theme is being erected at RK Beach . This will be the main stage for presentation of cultural activities. The festival will kick-off with a folk carnival at 5 p.m. on the opening day. The treasure hunt on wheels (cars) would take the participants through the places of tourist interest in and around the city as they try to find the hidden treasure. The clues to find the treasure would be given on the mobile app. The participant and his family members can travel in the car as they go hunting for the treasure. The maximum permissible speed is 30 km/hr and the vehicle should have the required documents and the driver a valid driving licence. The food stalls, to be set up by various hotels on the beach, would dish out not only local varieties of food items but also tickle the taste buds of people coming from other parts of the country as also international tourists through international cuisines. Event organised to promote universal brotherhood and peace. Vizagites witnessed a grand spectacle with over 900 persons releasing floating sky lanterns at Aqua Sports Complex in the city on Sunday. Second edition The second edition of the event hosted by Times of Vizag, a social media group, was aimed at promoting universal brotherhood and peace. When hundreds of lanterns rose into the sky, the weekend revellers greeted with loud cheers and whistles. ‘Message to society’ Rajesh and Lakshmi, who accompanied their toddlers, said the event would send a good message to society. The busy Ramakrishna Beach came to a standstill with the sky magic lasting for 90 minutes. The floating lantern festival was first launched in Thailand. Start-up Prog For Women At IIM Visakhapatnam. VISAKHAPATNAM: IIM-Visakhapatnam will soon roll out a 'women start-up programme' in partnership with IIM-Bangalore to nurture next generation women entrepreneurs. IIM-V will soon sign an MoU with IIM-B for the same. This will be a first-of-its kind tailor-made online and classroom training programme to hone the entrepreneurial skills of women. IIM-V officials are planning to develop a 6,000 sq ft space for this programme in a building located next to the existing facility in Andhra University premises. The programme will be financially supported by Department of Science and Technology. IIM-B has already introduced the programme to 15 women entrepreneurs. They want to take the number to 100 in partnership with other IIMs. We will release a formal ad to invite applications for the five-week online course, said IIM-V director Prof M Chandrasekhar.
