Visakhapatnam: Principal special judge for CBI cases Gayathri Devi on Friday sentenced a railway employee to three years of rigorous imprisonment under the PC Act, 1988, and a fine of Rs 10,000 for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000.The CBI anti-corruption wing had registered the case in 2012 against Galla Subramanyam, then senior clerk in mechanical wing of South Central Railway, Vijayawada, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 from the complainant, who is also a railway employee, for processing pending bills.

Ground all housing projects in Visakhapatnam at the earliest, HRD Minister tells officials VISAKHAPATNAM : HRD minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao on Friday asked the officials to submit a detailed status report on all the rural and urban housing schemes undertaken in the district and take steps to complete the grounding of all projects at the earliest. Reviewing the progress of the ongoing projects here, the minister asked the Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and the Housing department heads to expedite the works of NTR Housing scheme, JNNURM houses, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and the Hudhud relief projects. “In case there is a fund constraint, I will pursue the matter with the chief minister. All officers must take responsibility to ground all the sanctioned schemes immediately,” the minister said. GVMC commissioner M Hari Narayanan informed the minister that nearly 3,000 houses out of the total sanctioned 8,585 had been grounded. Under the joint supervision of AP Township Infrastructure Development Corporation and the Municipal Administration, tenders were floated for six residential layout projects in the GVMC limits. “For these layouts, the government has approved 4,120 units and we will select the eligible beneficiaries soon. Under the Hudhud relief works, 4,222 houses were sanctioned and their construction is in progress in phases,” the municipal commissioner said.

However, international air passenger traffic declined by 19.5% from 1.21 lakh in 2015-16 to just about 97849 in 2016-17. As many as 21.12 lakh domestic passengers used the Vizag Airport in 2016-17 as against 16.8 lakh in the previous fiscal registering a growth of 34.3%. More flights are connecting different destinations with Vizag and airfares are also more affordable as compared to previous years," observed Vizag Airport director Vinod Kumar Sharma. "Domestic air freight handled at Vizag Airport has also witnessed a surge in 2016-17.

Green signal likely for Bhogapuram airport soon VISAKHAPATNAM: The Bhogapuram International Airport is now cruising towards take off as the expert appraisal committee (EAC) under the ministry of environment and forests has recommended the airport project for environmental clearance. Following the EAC meeting, which was held on April 13 in New Delhi, the EAC has recommended the Bhogapuram project for clearance, as per the minutes of meeting released by the MoEF on Thursday. The recommendation by the EAC is for the phase-1 development of the Bhogapuram International Airport at an estimated cost of Rs 2,260.73 crore on an area of 2,004.52 acres in Vizianagaram district. Sources said subsequently, the MoEF, based on the EAC recommendation, is likely to provide environmental clearance in the near future. Subsequently, the Bhogapuram International Airport Corporation Limited (BIACL) is expected to finalise the bids in the next couple of months for selecting the developer for the mega project. "Once the official environmental clearance order is received, about one month or 45 days will be given for the prospective developers to submit their final bids for the Bhogapuram Airport project. We are expecting the bids to be finalised by June-end," a state government source said on condition of anonymity. Defunct LED bulbs take the light out of consumers’ life VISAKHAPATNAM: Domestic consumers of AP Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) who initially rejoiced at the provision of two LED bulbs for each household for Rs 20 from the government are now expressing disappointment over the defunct bulbs. At least 10% of the distributed bulbs are not functioning. "I took a pair of LED bulbs from the government in January 2016. Within a few months, both the bulbs got damaged. The lighting was also not good," C Satya, an APEPDCL consumer in the city, said Officials said they do not have data on the number of defunct bulbs. However they are opening service centres for replacement of these bulbs to the people. T V Surya Prakash, superintendent engineer (operations) of APEPDCL for Visakhapatnam district, said they planned to set up 13 replacement centres across the district. So far, six centres have been launched and balance centres would be opened soon. Surya Prakash said the bulbs were distributed by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). Saurabh Kumar, managing director of EESL, told TOI from New Delhi that they had received complaints about the defunct LED bulbs they distributed in the state from October 2014. EESL would replace the defunct LED bulbs as they are within the warranty period of three years.

Simhachalam gears up for ‘Chandanotsavam’ Visakhapatnam: The hill shrine of Simhachalam is getting ready for the annual chandanotsavam to be held on April 29. The police department plans to deploy 2,000 personnel including 500 exclusively to monitor traffic. The cops are taking all necessary precautions for safety of the devotees and also the VIPs including governor ESL Narasimhan who is slated to visit the temple with his wife. "A round-the-clock command control centre would monitor all aspects along with officials from the police, revenue, medical and health and disaster management wings. We are arranging CCTVs at all exit and entry points of the temple and queue lanes. Six mobile video cameras would also be put to work to find irregularities and violation of rules," said city police commissioner T Yoganand. Around 5,000 VIP and protocol passes were distributed by the management, but sources said the demand from the government departments is four times more. Yoganand said no person without valid ticket or pass will be allowed entry. Verification of passes would take place before they enter the ghat roads. VIPs will be allowed for darshan only from 5 am to 6 am and 4 pm to 5 pm. The Rs 1,000 ticket holders would be accommodated in the 15 mini AC buses from Toli Pavancha to the temple on the hill. The security had a tough time controlling the jostling crowd and queue. The multiplex management had closed the gate and was allowing only a few people at a time to the counter for purchasing tickets for Friday's show. "Given the crowd and queue, it doesn't seem like I'm going to get tickets before 10 pm today. My mother is a big fan of Prabhas. So, I am going to watch the movie with my family tomorrow. It seems this will be better than the first part," said K Prajwala, working in Concentrix, Vizag at Inox. Some theatres, like Jagadamba, which had opened online booking a few days in advance, had got almost all tickets sold out. Multiplexes like Inox Beach Road and CMR Central opened their bookings only on Thursday night. Venkateswara Rao, an employee with a private company, said, "I managed a ticket for the premiere show on Thursday night at Jagadamba Theatre. I got the ticket from one of my friends, who is connected to a theatre owner. I paid Rs 1,000 for the ticket, but some of my friends paid Rs 4,000 for the premiere show," said Rao.

Visakhapatnam: City student L Tarun Kumar secured 100th rank in the all-India rankings of IIT-JEE exam. L Tarun Kumar, son of a conductor, topped the rankings from the cityt by getting the 100th rank . Sriharsh secured 687th rank, Sagar Chiranai 1053, Pranathi 1251, S Aslesh 1459 and Samadrita Sarkar 1571 rank. Two hundred and three students of FIT-JEE Vizag centre secured ranks out of 325 who appeared for the exam. Centre head of FITJEE B Gurunath congratulated the students.

Bhoota Venkata Ramana, 38, from Visakhapatnam, was among the three soldiers killed in the terror attack in Kashmir in the early hours of Thursday. Venkata Ramana, a native of Kancharapalem in Vizag, is survived by his wife, two children and parents. His daughter Chinmayi, 9, is in class four and son Ganesh is a primary school student. Ramana joined the army 18 years ago and had served in various camps. A pal of gloom descended on Asavanipalem area in Kancharapalem of Vizag, where the family stays. Ramana’s mother Ramulamma was inconsolable. His wife Anitha went into a shock learning about the tragedy. His father Kunchalam, a farmer, said, “My son had laid down his life for the country. I heard two terrorists were gunned down. If it was only two terrorists who had participated in the attack and those two were gunned down, the reply by our Army men is befitting.” Jawan Ramana’s one younger brother Appala Raju is also in the Army. Another younger brother Koteswara Rao is a auto driver in Vizag. An emotional Koteswara Rao said, “Post me in the border. I don’t want any salary or compensation. I want to destroy those terror camps. I am not scared of dying for the nation.”
