City Gears Up For...
55 community toilets modernized by retrofitting to set an example.

A series of measures have been taken to help the city do well in Swachh Bharat Survekshan having achieved fifth rank in all-India rankings in 2015.

Swachh Survekshan team will conduct the survey this year from January 7 to 9.

Ahead of the survey setting an example in the State 55 community toilets were modernized by retrofitting Municipal Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan said here on Thursday.

Visakhapatnam received three awards of the State government in cleanliness on October 2.
India’s Tallest Sky Tower Posted on 06-Jan-2017
Visakhapatnam: Standing tall at 120 metres from the sea level India’s tallest tower is coming up atop Kailasagiri Hills in less than one year. The tower will offer a panoramic view of the sea, city and surrounding areas. Mumbai-based Bombay Amusements Ltd, the promoters of the project is partnering with Hyderabad-based Swarnamukhi EXIM Pvt Ltd to execute the project. An MoU in this regard will be signed with either Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority or Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation on January 6.

Students, teachers participate in a string of programmes. A group of students were busy giving finishing touches to an elaborate rangoli design. Makeshift stalls were arranged to offer traditional snacks and refreshments. At the entrance a well-decorated ‘Gangireddu’ was following instructions of its master meticulously. A large quantity of steaming hot ‘pongal’ was getting cooked. Holding a ‘tambura’ in a hand and an ‘akshaya patra’ on the head, the famous Haridasu was seen walking around.

An array of colourful kites dotted the skyline providing a grand spectacle to those who visited the Beach Road on Sunday. The kite festival organised by Rotaract Club of Vizag Metro as part of Sankranti festival evoked an encouraging response. Several organisations are planning to hold similar events in the next few days. We organised the festival to keep our culture and traditions alive, club president Manognya said. Rotarian's P.L.K. Murthy, Public Relations chairman, Rotary International-3020, and others were present.

Call to Focus on Swachh Visakha Posted on 10-Jan-2017
President of Chaitanya Sravanthi Shirin Rehman on Monday said the focus should be on Swachh Viskha in implementing the smart city project. She was addressing teachers and students of B.V.K. Junior College at an awareness programme and explained to them the importance of Swachh Survekshan. Ms Shirin Rahman urged the students to play a significant role in keeping the environs clean and developing the city into a smart city. In the end, she spoke about the intensive cleanliness drive taken up by Chaitanya Sravanthi and how the NGO made an impact in bringing attitudinal change among the residents of Peda Jalaripeta, Paindorapeta and Chilakapeta.

Increase in number of students in U.S. taking up Hindi as a foreign language. It was his sheer love for the language of Hindi which brought Elmar Renner from Germany to India six years ago. Today he not only has a flawless command over the language but also is an assistant professor of Hindi, Sanskrit and Urdu in Copenhagen University in Demark which has seen an increasing interest in learning Hindi as a foreign language among Europeans. At the New York University’s (NYU) College of Arts and Science this year, around 80 students have enthusiastically taken up a foreign language class with one agenda — mastering the Hindi alphabet. In the U.S., there are a growing number of Westerners who have, in recent years, shown great interest in keeping pace with India’s rising global influence by learning the national language of the country.

The festive fervour of Sankranti the festival of harvest has spread across the nook and cranny of the city. Shopping malls and market places in the city were abuzz with activity ahead of the festival on Wednesday as people came out in large number to make last minute festive purchases. The exuberance of the festive season can be seen in the glittering offers in the market. The busy Jagadamba Junction virtually resembled a sea of humanity with shoppers making a beeline at several stores offering festive discounts. Traffic snarls were witnessed at other major places like Jagadamba Junction, Poorna Market, Daba Gardens, RTC Complex, VIP Road and Sampath Vinayak Temple Road.
