Vizag police gears up to tackle cockfight.

Police Commissioner has asked all police stations to form teams and increase patrolling in potential areas.

If the police do not receive a last-minute nod from the government, staging cockfight during the coming Sankranti festival will be a difficult proposition for organisers and punters.

Based on a Supreme Court order, the High Court of Hyderabad had in December 2016 issued a directive to ban cockfight and made the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police answerable if the sport was staged.

But this directive seems to be only on paper: last year, a day before the beginning of the festival, an informal order from authorities was circulated and the enforcement officers were allegedly told to turn a blind eye to the blood sport.

Cockfight is organised in high stakes in districts such as East and West Godavari, Guntur and Krishna. But since the past two years, Visakhapatnam has also joined the league to become a hotspot. Unlike in other places where cockfights are organised in rural areas, in Visakhapatnam it was organised behind a hillock in Arilova area.

Makeshift arenas were constructed and the place was readied to accommodate over 10,000 people at a time. Punters set up counters, tokens were issued, roosters were brought in from various districts and, as per conservative estimates, the total amount of money put into betting exceeded ₹40 crore in just two days.

What can we do when we receive instructions from the highest offices to lie low? asked a senior police officer.

It is learnt that the venue is readied even this year and the police on Monday had raided the location and taken 10 persons into custody. Hoping that the high court directive will be followed in true letter and spirit and that there will be no ‘informal orders’, the police is gearing up to tackle the issue. Police Commissioner T. Yoganand has asked all police stations to form teams and increase patrolling.
New scuba diving hotspot Posted on 10-Jan-2018
Vizag could be new scuba diving hotspot. Discovery of a 200-year-old shipwreck has the diving community all excited The rare discovery of a 200-year-old shipwreck is set to turn the quaint fishing village of Bheemunipatnam, about 45 km from Visakhapatnam, into the next big scuba diving destination of the country. The wreck, located just six metres below the sea surface was first spotted by scuba divers Balaram Naidu and dive master Anil Kumar on December 21. The team made their second exploration to the wreck site on Monday and the findings have the scuba diving community all excited. Preliminary observations revealed the shipwreck site to be spread over a vast area. Our findings indicate the ship to be around 200 years old, and 150 metres in length. But we are still in the process of putting together all the facts,” said Mr. Naidu who is also the director of Livein Adventures, a Visakhapatnam-based firm that conducts adventure sports. On Monday the scuba diving team spotted parrot fish, yellow back snappers, sweetlips, ribbonfish, moray eel, and lion fish among other rich aquatic life in and around the shipwreck. According to experienced scuba divers, this is probably the only wreck site in the world at such a shallow depth, making it accessible even to novice divers and non-swimmers. “Most of the world’s famous shipwreck sites are located deep in the ocean where only experienced and certified scuba divers can go,” Mr. Kumar said.
