Navy Marathon A Runaway Hit 13-Nov-2017
Runners throng Beach Road in city to take part in the event. A mix of more than 12,000 professional and amateur runners headed to Beach Road on Sunday much before the dawn to show their dedication towards fitness and join hands for the fourth edition of the Vizag Navy Marathon – 2017. Featured by the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) to mark its golden jubilee, the marathon was held in four categories -- full (42.2 km), half (21.1 km), 10 km and 5 km. starting from 4.15 a.m. Dressed in blue T-shirt and sportswear, the navy personnel and civilians participated in it with enthusiasm after doing warm-ups. With the local bands providing perfect setting by playing some good music, participants were seen achieving their target effortlessly.
 
Boxing Championship A Big Hit 31-Oct-2017
Visakhapatnam perfect platform for emerging talent, say coaches. The second edition of Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship, which drew to a close here on Monday, was a big hit with over 300 boxers from 37 States and sports promotion boards participating in it. Swarnabharati Indoor Stadium, venue of the tournament hosted by the Railway Sports Promotion Board, was brimming with spectators and boxing lovers on all days particularly on the last three days. With drum beats, continuous claps and whistles provided perfect platform for finals of the mega event. Though home team members made an early exit from the tournament it did not deter mood of the non-partisan spectators of the City of Destiny.
 
Vizag to Host First ODI Today 06-Oct-2017
Visakhapatnam: Gaining confidence after winning two four-day matches against New Zealand A team in Vijayawada, India A team is looking forward to win the series in the five- match one-day series. The tourists are also, despite losing the four-day matches, hoping to win beginning with the Vizag match. The five matches of One-Day series between India A and New Zealand A teams will begin at Dr YSR Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDDA stadium in Vizag city on October 6 (Friday).
 
Feast For Cricket Lovers in City 08-Sep-2017
Good amount of cricket is in store for the cricket buffs of the city. The city will host five ODI’s between India A and New Zealand A from October 6 to 15. While Vijayawada will host two four-day matches from September 23 to 26 and from September 30 to October 3. The ODIs will be held in Visakhapatnam on October 6, 8, 10, 13 and 15, according to an official press release from BCCI. This apart Team India will clash with the Asian rivals Sri Lanka in an ODI in December this year.
 
2 Sports Academies Opened in Vizag 17-Aug-2017
Visakhapatnam: Collector Pravin Kumar said that every effort will be made to transform Visakhapatnam district into a major sports hub in the coming years. Speaking during the inauguration of two sports academies here on Wednesday, he said the government's endeavor is to encourage sports culture. Opening the sports academies (archery and rifle shooting) and a sports-adopted schools programme at Sanskruthi Global School here, R&B minister Ch Ayyanna Patrudu said the government has come up with the best sports policy in the country. "Other states have now started emulating our sports policy. We have identified 31 schools to set up sports academies, he said and urged parents to give importance to sports along with education.

Downpour, cricket add to denizens’ Sunday cheer. Visakhapatnam: Vizagites breathed a sigh of relief as heavy rain lashed the port city on Sunday morning. Nothing could have been better than waking up to the sounds of thunder on a weekend. Moreover, the India-Pakistan IIC Champion's Trophy match added to the cheer. "I usually wake up late on Sundays, but today the weather was so inviting that I went for a drive with my family along the Vizag-Bheemili Beach Road. It was sort of a picnic for us thanks to the cool weather, else we would have to stay put inside air-conditioned rooms," said V Sumanth, a software professional. T Poojitha, an MBA student who also loves photography, said, "The pleasant morning weather took me to the beaches for photography. After a very long time, I enjoyed a pleasant weather in Vizag." The beach-going crowd also increased in the evening as many preferred to be outdoors instead of staying cooped in malls and multiplexes. But, there were also the cricket buffs who won't miss out on a single over of the match. Srikanth Sathpathy, a public sector employee and a cricket enthusiast, said, "India's total score (319/3) in 48 overs is quite encouraging. It wouldn't be a cakewalk for Pakistan to reach that total tonight. So far, the day has been good. But what can be a better way to conclude than with a victory over Pakistan. We friends have gathered at one place to watch the match and hopefully celebrate India's victory late night."

Visakhapatnam: MT Krishna Babu, Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) on Sunday assured complete help to Hockey Andhra Pradesh and its Visakhapatnam unit in establishing infrastructural facilities required for the conduct of tournaments beginning with a Chairman’s Cup. He also urged the sport’s administrators to take advantage of the Diamond Jubilee Outdoor stadium once its renovation work is complete. Krishna Babu was addressing an impressive gathering of players, patrons and administrators during the summer coaching camp at the Port Sports Complex after giving away kits to the trainees.In what came as music the ears of Hockey Visakhapatnam officials, he assured to develop the Port hockey ground at Salagramapuram exclusively for players of the sport.
 
VSP Cricketer Selected for India 13-Mar-2017
Visakhapatnam: A promising all-rounder KV Sasikanth from Vizag has been selected for the India Emerging-U-23 team that will play in the Asian Cricket Council's Tournament (Emerging Cup) in Dhaka in the last week of March. A right-arm fast bowler Sasikanth is also emerging to be a solid middle order batsman for the ACA. Just 21 years old Sasikanth is a final year BA student from Dr Lankapalli Bullayya College in Vizag city. He proved to be one of the stars of the Andhra Under-23 team during the recently concluded CK Nayudu U-23 Trophy tourney where the Andhra team created history by entering the finals where they lost to the team from Punjab. During this tournament he scored 180 runs and scalped 34 wickets in seven matches, prompting his selection in the national squad, which will be led by Tamil Nadu bat Baba Aparajit. Eight teams will participate in this tourney.

Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) will host the Prof. D.B. Deodhar Trophy tournament at the Dr. YSR ACA-VDCA Stadium, Visakhapatnam from March 25 to 29, ACA secretary Ch. Swimming contest draws good respons 22-Feb-2017

The swimming competitions for under 14 children was conducted separately for boys and girls in the two age groups in four events: 50 M backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke and butterflyDIG Visakhapatnam range Ch. The inaugural edition of swimming competition organised by Vizag Sports Journalists Association (ViSJA) in association with Visakhapatnam District Swimming Association at Aqua Sport Complex in Vizag city was a resounding success with over 160 children (under-12 and under-14 boys and girls), participating in it here on Sunday. Inaugurating the event, Mr. Prasad said that OAV would continue its support for organising more competitions in other sports such as basketball, football, badminton and a few other disciplines for children in the coming days.
